Adhesives for a Glued Alternative Hoof Protection
go to the online shopThe right glue...
One of the most important aspects if you want to glue an alternative hoof protection is of course the adhesive that you use. In the context of alternative hoof protection, the glue must form a good adhesive bond with the hoof and the hoof protection. There is a large variety of instant adhesives available. There are many different superglues based on a wide variety of chemical compositions. Which glue is best for you depends on various factors. Not all superglues are equally suitable for a glued hoof protection.
No matter which glue you use: Make sure that it is not left open for too long, since this is when most glues draw moisture from the air and begin to harden. This leads to an instable adhesive bond between the glue-on tabs and the hoof.
There can be many reasons why an adhesive shoe does not last properly due to the adhesive.
It may be, for example, that the hoof and/or the air are too dry:
- The adhesive needs a certain amount of moisture for activation.
- If the hoof is too dry in summer, for example, the glue on the glue-on tabs may harden faster than the glue on the hoof.
- If the adhesive lacks the moisture necessary for activation, it will take longer to harden completely.
How an adhesive reacts to conditions that are too dry (or too humid) can vary depending on the type of adhesive.
We know from experience that the MD-Blitzschnell in particular reacts even more sensitively to conditions that are too dry. The good news is: You can counteract againgst this quite well by moistening the hoof with a damp cloth 5 minutes before gluing. However, make absolutely sure that the cloth does not produce lint!
Also an important aspect when choosing the right adhesive is the temperature. Glues are more or less fluid depending on the ambient temperature. Thus, not every type of glue that works well in winter is also the right choice in summer.
At warmer temperatures above 10°C (50°F), we recommend the "Summer Glue" from Marston Domsel or the Top2Glue instant glue "Gel". At temperatures below 5°C (41°F), the summer glue is no longer as reliable and the adhesion of the glue-on tabs on the hoof is not as well assured. At lower temperatures (below 10°C / 50°F) we therefore recommend the "Winter Glue" from Marston Domsel or the "Medium" from Top2Glue. Please note that the glues from Top2Glue can only be shipped within Europe.
Please also note the final strength that corresponds to the your adhesive; often it is around 24 hours. After gluing, the horse can of course go to the paddock or pasture as usual, but should not be fully exercised immediately.
No matter which glue you use: Wear gloves and follow the safety instructions for handling it! We have indicated the information provided by the manufacturer for each glue at the respective article description.
The REACH Regulation
The European Commission has changed annex XVII of the REACH regulation (EG) (new no. 74) with the regulation (EU) 2020/1149 which has entered into force as from August 24, 2020. Many farriers are currently unsure which adhesives they may use in the future without a corresponding training and certificate. That's why we have asked our glue vendors about the "diisocyanates" topic.
The instant adhesives that are available in our online shop are not affected by the new regulation and you can use them as usual (while respecting the safety information given with the glue).
Instant Adhesives - Photos
Gloves, sandpaper, Multifoam (cleaning spray), an old rag or towel and the appropriate glue - it's best to have everything at hand.
Stick on each glue tab individually, taking care not to "drown" them in glue. The rule is: less is more.
Spread the individual glue tabs, outline them with glue and make a cross and four dots into them.
The open-toed horseshoe is also popular as a glued alternative hoof protection with the Wolf Busch adhesive tabs.
Immediately after gluing, press the gluing tabs evenly with two fingers from bottom to top for approx. 10-15 seconds.
Regardless of which glue-on tabs you use - the "Pro", "Easy" or "Wolf Busch": Seal the upper edge of the glue-on tabs with a little glue.
Application and Safety Instructions - VIDEO
Whether during the shoeing or later in the pasture or while riding: There are certain safety instructions and injury hazards to which we must draw your attention.
Our safety instructions are not only directed at the farrier, but also at the horse owner and rider. Follow them to avoid injuries to people and horses!
If you want to glue an alternative hoof protection to the hoof, you have to observe the safety instructions of the of the glue. If you buy the glue in our online store, you will find them directly at the article description.
A Step-by-Step Video Instruction for Glued Shoeing using the Wolf Busch Glue-On Tabs (formerly RB-Carbon)
If you are interested in a glued hoof protection, you should watch our video on the application of Wolf Busch glue tabs in combination with our shoes.
In the video, certified farrier Shelly Frank explains the procedure for a successful adhesive shoeing, where both the glued connection between adhesive tabs and hoof as well as the plastic welding between shoe and adhesive tabs is reliable.
In addition to the glue used, there are of course other factors that are important for a successful glued hoof protection. These include, among other things, the correct bare hoof treatment and a strong plastic welding seam between the shoe and the glue tabs.

Tips and Tricks
Our goal is to be able to offer you as many products as possible that you need as a farrier for shoeing or in this case for gluing. Especially in the context of glued hoof protection, you need several additional products.
Hoof Cleaner
We recommend roughening the hoof wall with sandpaper and then degreasing both the inside of glue shoe and the the hoof wall below the coronet band. We have good experience with the cleaning spray Multifoam. We recommend that you spray Multifoam on the previously roughened hoof wall and let the foam work for about 30 seconds. Afterwards wipe it off thoroughly and wait until the hoof is dry before you start gluing.
You should definitely be careful not to use a cleaning spray that contains acetone. Many use brake cleaning fluid for this purpose in order to degrease the hoof; we, however, advise against this.
Why you should not use Brake Cleaning Fluid as a Cleaning Spray when Gluing:
Both acetone-containing and acetone-free brake cleaners reduce the tensile strength of the colored elastomer of the Wolf Busch glue tabs. Depending on the intensity and duration of exposure, the effect ranges from "hardly noticeable" to "massively damaging". Since we cannot ensure that such fluids are applied briefly and gently enough, we generally do not recommend using them in the context of adhesive shoeing.
Reliable Plastic Welding Seams
The goal of adhesive shoeing is that the combination of glue tabs and shoe will remain on the hoof and the horse does not constantly lose the shoe.
If an glued shoe is lost, it may be due to the fact that the glue tabs do not adhere firmly enough to the hoof. Of course, it can also be that the glue tabs are holding tightly to the hoof, but the plastic welding seam between the glue tabs and the shoe is tearing. Stable and uniform welds are just as important for a reliable glued hoof protection as the adhesive used.
Our goal is to offer you the best possible support in this area as well. For this reason, we carry our welding devices in our assortment. We generally recommend that you always check whether your welds will hold up to an intensive tear test before gluing.
