Hoof Cast — Made of Composite Horseshoe, Cast Hooks and Casting Tape
A perfect shoe for (almost) every horse — this is our long-term goal and therefore we have to think about diseased or injured hooves as well. Sometimes, there are situations in a horse's life in which it can be useful to completely immobilize the horn capsule. For these situations we have developped our cast hooks.
One of the most crucial aspects when applying a hoof cast is the duration of the hoof cast on the hoof. When using our cast system, you will be able to benefit from a more durable hoof cast since the bottom side of the horseshoe is not covered by the casting tape. However, the durability of the hoof cast should not determine its duration on the hoof. This decision should be made in close co-operation with the farrier and/or veterinarian on site. If intact, the hoof mechanism and the musculoskeletal system of the horse typically work perfectly together. If some parts of this system are immobilized, this can lead to an inappropriate biomechanical stress of other areas. Therefore, a hoof cast should be applied very cautiously.
Our cast hooks can be used in combination with every composite horseshoe of our range. We do not recommend using them with the pure plastic shoes. Our open-toed horseshoes have proven their worth in various diagnoses in combination with our cast hooks. Unfortunately, when using the regular horseshoes, manual adjustments to the cast-hooks are still necessary from size 142mm onwards.
When wrapping the casting tape around the hoof, please make sure that the coronary band and the heel bulbs remain uncovered!
Necessary Equipment for Your Hoof Cast
- The appropriate composite horseshoe.
- The correct number of cast strips — one strip consists of 9 hooks and you usually require 6 per horseshoe.
- To attach the cast hooks to the horseshoe, you require one screw per cast hook; we recommend DIN 7982 / ISO 7050 countersunk head self-tapping screws 4.2mm x 19mm.
- One roll of casting tape per hoof and disposable gloves for wrapping the casting tape around the hoof.
- Protective gloves and your farrier tools for barefoot trimming and expert adjustment of the horseshoe.
For more information and a step-by-step guide for a cast application of our composite shoes, please refer to our product description.
Please read and follow our safety instructions for all work with our products, which are directed to both the farrier and the horse owner. When handling the cast hooks, please be aware that you could potentially cut yourself on the small spikes; therefore, we recommend wearing protective gloves. Please refer to the manufacturer's information for use when working with the casting tape (synthetic fibreglass cast).
