product description

Customized Le Czar Composite Horse Shoe Spreader – Shaping Composite Horseshoes Professionally and Easily

A colleague came up with the idea of modifying a regular steel horse shoe spreader to shape composite horseshoes in a more time- and cost-effective and easier way compared to using a special Heuer vice made in Germany or a Fuller vice that can also push. A vice with this capability can be difficult to obtain and is considerably more expensive.

We liked this idea so much that we decided to make this modified shoe spreader easily available to support your everyday farrier work and to demonstrate what is possible with composite horseshoes. We know that every product is only as good as the person using it, and we want to help you get the most out of it.

Due to their integrated metal core, Duplo composite horseshoes offer the perfect combination of support and flexibility. They provide an ideal balance between protection and barefoot function. Just like with a steel shoe, your farrier skills are essential to achieve the perfect fit for each individual hoof shape.

This professionally modified shoe spreader has been designed to modify composite horseshoes quickly and precisely using muscle power.

The CL shoe spreader designed by Caro Lucas is lying on an anvil next to a forging hammer.

Key Benefits of the Customized Le Czar Composite Horse Shoe Spreader

  • easy modification of composite horseshoes by spreading the shoe, making it wider, shorter, and rounder instead of using a larger size and removing more of the supportive and beneficial synthetic material from the hind part of the shoe to fit the hoof
  • shaping the shoe asymmetrically or making one half wider and the other narrower if the hoof shape requires it
  • precise adjustment to fit the horse's hooves
  • simple handling with effective leverage in combination with muscle power
  • suitable for Duplo composite horseshoes with a flexible hind part in sizes 118 to 170, depending on your strength (not suitable for composite horseshoes with a ring-shaped metal inlay)
  • inventory- and time-saving benefits

Practical Alternative to a Vise

Widening and shaping a Duplo composite horseshoe is commonly done using a specific vise (Heuer 120 – blue – made in Germany or Fuller – red).

However, not every farrier has a suitable vise available on-site. Finding one with the ability to push open turned out to be quite a challenge in Canada and also comes with a completely different price tag.

The Customized Le Czar Composite Horse Shoe Spreader offers a compact and efficient alternative for widening and shaping composite horseshoes easily and cost-effectively. This allows you to reduce the need to carry a large inventory of every available size. It also helps avoid unscheduled client visits to tack a shoe back on because it was not shaped properly and the horse pulled it off.

Working with the Customized Le Czar Composite Horse Shoe Spreader – Video Tutorial

A detailed video tutorial by Caro Lucas demonstrates how to work with the shoe spreader and shows the different possible modifications, including narrowing the shoe, which is done using a hammer and anvil.

Please take a few minutes to watch the video tutorial before using the tool.

Wider – Shorter – Rounder
Asymmetrical – Half Wide / Half Narrow

Depending on how you want to modify the shoe – making it wider, shorter, or rounder – you need to ensure that the welded steel pins are positioned at the correct distance on the branches of the shoe spreader.

Please watch the video tutorial for detailed instructions and practical guidance on using the shoe spreader.

Customizing Composite Shoes with the Shoe Spreader

Size Range and Compatibility

Welded steel pins positioned at different distances allow precise adjustment for various sizes. The Customized Le Czar Composite Horse Shoe Spreader has two working sides: the narrow side is designed for shoes from 118mm up to approximately 146mm.
From this size onwards, the tool must be turned so that the pins can properly engage with the larger holes in the Duplo shoes. The wider side is suitable for shoes from 146mm upwards and can be used up to size 170mm, although muscle strength eventually becomes the natural limiting factor.

Unfortunately, it is not suitable for modifying shoes with a ring-shaped metal inlay (Straight Bar Shoes).

Overall, the Customized Le Czar Composite Horse Shoe Spreader allows efficient and controlled modification of Duplo shoes from 118mm to larger sizes. Since the most commonly used sizes in our range are between 118mm and 146mm, the tool is ideally suited for the most frequently sold sizes while still offering flexibility beyond that range depending on the user's strength.

Customization Limits – What the Shoe Spreader Cannot Do

The shoe spreader is a highly effective tool for horseshoe customization, but of course there is no single tool that covers every possible modification. Farriery is too diverse, and the individual needs of each horse require a wide range of customized solutions. Professional hoof care often calls for different techniques and tools to achieve the best possible result for every hoof. For this reason, we would like to highlight a few additional aspects of horseshoe customization at this point – even if these adjustments cannot be carried out with the shoe spreader itself.

Making the Shoe Narrower

In order to make a shoe narrower, you have to use a hammer and anvil as usual. This modification is not possible with the Customized Le Czar Composite Horse Shoe Spreader.

Wider and Longer

For this purpose, you may use our Extensions or a different shoe size that can be closed up with a hammer and anvil, which also extends the back of the shoe further.

Whether you are a farrier or a horse owner, it is important to read and follow our Safety Instructions when using our products in order to avoid injuries to humans and horses.
